Irish dental graduates seeking to practise abroad need their qualifications authenticated. Whether registering with the GDC in the UK, state dental boards in the USA, or dental authorities in the Middle East, your Irish dental qualifications will need notarisation.

The Dental Council of Ireland regulates dentists, specialists, hygienists, and dental nurses. Irish dental degrees — particularly the BDS from UCC and Trinity — are internationally recognised. Foreign regulatory bodies require authenticated proof.

UK Registration in Detail
The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates all dental professionals in Great Britain. Irish-qualified dentists seeking GDC registration must submit authenticated qualification documents and may need to pass the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) unless they hold a qualification that the GDC has determined provides evidence of equivalent standards. The Irish BDS from UCC and Trinity has historically been well-regarded by the GDC, but applicants should check the current GDC requirements.
Dental specialists (orthodontists, oral surgeons, periodontists, etc.) seeking specialist registration with the GDC need additional authenticated documentation — specialist qualification certificates, training records, and evidence of supervised specialist practice.
USA Registration
Practising dentistry in the United States requires state-by-state licensure. Most states require foreign-trained dentists to complete additional education at a US dental school (typically a 2-year Advanced Standing programme) and pass the INBDE (Integrated National Board Dental Examination). Authenticated Irish dental qualifications are required as part of the application to US dental schools and state dental boards.
Some states also require a credential evaluation by an agency such as the Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), which will need notarised copies of your Irish degree and transcripts.
Middle East Practice
Gulf states are significant employers of dental professionals. The registration process requires the most extensive document authentication: notarisation by an Irish Notary Public, apostille by the Department of Foreign Affairs, legalisation by the relevant embassy, and sometimes local Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. Health authorities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar also typically require a minimum number of years of post-qualification experience and verified clinical competencies.
