Irish teachers are highly regarded worldwide. Whether moving to the UK, Middle East, Asia, or Australia, your Irish teaching qualifications will need to be notarised and authenticated for registration with the foreign teaching authority.
Overview
The Teaching Council of Ireland registers teachers and sets qualification standards. When seeking to teach abroad, the foreign country's teaching authority typically requires authenticated proof of qualifications and registration status.

Teaching Council of Ireland — Key Documents
The Teaching Council of Ireland maintains the register of teachers in Ireland. For international teaching applications, the Teaching Council can provide several important documents. The certificate of registration confirms your current registration on the Teaching Council register and the subjects or areas you are registered to teach. The letter of professional standing confirms your good standing status — that there are no ongoing fitness-to-teach inquiries or sanctions against you. Both documents are essential for foreign teaching authority applications.
Request these documents from the Teaching Council well in advance, as processing times may vary. Once received, bring the original documents to Hugh Phelan for notarisation. The notarised documents can then be apostilled for Hague Convention countries or legalised for others.
International Schools
International schools worldwide — whether following the International Baccalaureate (IB), British curriculum, American curriculum, or other systems — frequently require authenticated teaching qualifications from their staff. Even in countries where notarisation is not legally mandatory, international schools may require it as part of their own hiring and compliance procedures. If you are applying to an international school, ask the school's HR department about their specific document requirements early in the application process.
Garda Vetting and Police Clearance
Teacher safeguarding requirements mean that police clearance is universally required for teaching positions abroad. In Ireland, this is the Garda vetting disclosure. The disclosure document can be notarised for international use. Some countries require police clearance from every country where you have lived for more than a specified period (commonly 6 or 12 months), so you may need clearances from multiple jurisdictions.
The Garda vetting process is managed through the National Vetting Bureau. Individual teachers can apply through the Teaching Council. Allow adequate processing time, as vetting can take several weeks.
